Comment
The bop gene was the first Halobacterium gene to be cloned and sequenced. See Chang et al. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1981 Jun;78(6):3398-402](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6943548) and Dunn et al. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1981 Nov;78(11):6744-8](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12049093). Inactivating insertion elements and transcription start were subsequently characterized and resulted in the discovery of novel transcriptional signals in Archaea. See DasSarma et al. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1983 Apr;80(8):2201-5](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6300900), [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 1984 Jan;81(1):125-9](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16593404), Yang et al. [J Bacteriol. 1996 Feb;178(3):840-5](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8550521), Baliga et al. [Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2001 Feb;98(5):2521-5](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11226271), Baliga and DasSarma [J Bacteriol. 1999 Apr;181(8):2513-8](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10198017), and [Mol Microbiol. 2000; Jun 36(5):1175-83](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10844701), and DasSarma et al.
