Comment
pcn, on the large chromosome, codes for the Halobacterium sp. NRC-1 processivity clamp protein similar to the eukaryotic PCNA. The PCN gene is considered essential due to the inability to knock out the gene without the presence of a rescue plasmid containing the wild-type gene in trans. See Berquist et al. [BMC Genet. 2007 Jun 8;8:31](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17559652).
